Christina Huynh – graffiti grant funded murals
Strathfield Council was successful in obtaining funding through Graffiti Management Grant Program (Western Sydney) Facilitated by Department of Communities and Justice in 2022. The agreement was signed in 2023 with an artist delivering 4 murals at identified sites spanning the Strathfield Local Government area.
The objectives identified in the Graffiti Management Grant Guidelines included:
- Prevent and minimise incidents of graffiti vandalism
- Reduce the social, environmental, and economic impact of graffiti vandalism
- Enhance community confidence and perception of safety
Christina Huynh’s murals at four sites, have a shared theme of botanical elements, including native flora and cultural symbolism which explores the essential message of inclusion. Her intention was to paint subject matter that represents the local area’s cultural identity and depicts details that represent wellness, calm, and joy. The aim to enhance community confidence and the feeling of safety within the environment.
Pastime Potato Soup
'Pastime Potato Soup', painted by Christina Huynh, is one of four sibling murals commissioned by Strathfield Council in 2023-2024. Residing at 90 The Crescent in Homebush West, the mural is a still-life scene referencing teatime, adorned by silver dollar tree, eucalyptus gum, mimosa, sunshine conebush, and violet peas. The Chinese porcelain bowl with potato and carrot soup is a pastime favourite childhood dish. The overall scene is inspired by my grandmother's kitchen, accompanying the local Di Yuan Asian Groceries at Flemington Town Centre in Homebush West.
Bees, Peas and Botanicals
'Bees, Peas and Botanicals', painted by Christina Huynh, is one of four sibling murals commissioned by Strathfield Council in 2023-2024. Residing at Hudson Oval Park in Strathfield, the mural is a botanical-themed works featuring a hearty waratah at its centre, surrounded by gorse bitter peas, a silver dollar tree, and Australian wattle. Worker bees fly pollen throughout the piece. With a mixture of warm and pastel tones and bursts of deep yellow, the artwork is a celebration of the wonder of our native flora and unique Australian biodiversity.
Well Wishes
‘Well Wishes', painted by Christina Huynh, is one of four sibling murals commissioned by Strathfield Council in 2023-2024. Residing at Strathfield Square Carpark, the theme of the work draws on cultural symbolism of three sibling goldfish that dance in harmony between large magnolia and a blooming peony. In Chinese cultures, the goldfish is a universal symbol of luck, prosperity, and abundance. The purpose of this work serves as a 'well wish' to all who pass by.
Finch Study
‘Finch Study’ painted by Christina Huynh, is one of four sibling murals commissioned by Strathfield Council in 2023-2024. Residing on the corner of Rochester St and Broughton Road, in Strathfield, the mural is a sketchbook scene of moleskin studies created of the Australian Red-Browed finch among Eucalyptus gumnuts and the queen of the night (also known as tan Hua) which symbolises in Chinese culture, beauty and the fleeting nature of life. The overall works are a depiction of wellness, tranquillity, craft framed through an artist’s sketchbook.
