Celebrate Nature and Art with Where Song Began

Pop-up exhibition on display in the library foyer 12 February – 12 March 2026

Birds have long been celebrated in art for their beauty, symbolism, and presence across cultures. In the Homebush area, there is a rich variety of native birdlife. Sydney artist Nuha Saad’s Where Song Began public artworks draw inspiration from the local birdlife, particularly at the Mason Park Wetlands.

Commissioned by Create NSW and the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure, Where Song Began will bring three public artworks to Parramatta Road in Homebush. Each installation is designed to celebrate the area’s ancient song line and the diverse bird species that call the area home, by creating small ‘stepping stone’ or micro-sites for birds to rest and reconnect with nature.

As part of the creative process, Nuha Saad recently facilitated a fun and inspiring birdwatching and sketching workshop at the Mason Park Wetlands. Co-led with artist Mimi Tong and Dr. Andrew Huggett, an expert Ornithologist, this workshop allowed participants of all ages from the local community to connect with the local birdlife through hands-on observation and art. Attendees were able to sketch the birds in their natural habitat while learning about the diverse species that contribute to the area’s ecosystem.

These bird sketches created by participants are now part of this exhibition. Some of these drawings will be incorporated into the final Where Song Began public artwork at Park Road, Homebush!

Where Song Began public artworks will be a lasting reminder of the vital role birds play in our community and the environment.
