Next date: Sunday, 31 May 2026 | 02:00 PM to 04:00 PM
Come along to a talk on the Cinemas of the Strathfield District (and beyond). We will talk about the rise of films and cinemas from the late 1910s and the building of many lavish suburban cinemas in Sydney, which became an important social and recreation venue in the mid-20th century. Unfortunately, the coming of television in the 1950s caused the decline of attendance to suburban cinemas leading to their closure.
Afternoon tea will be served at 2pm before commencement of the talk.
The speaker is Cathy Jones, Secretary of the Strathfield-Homebush District Historical Society. The event is free. Please register your attendance here
