Mobile Licence Plate Recognition Technology
What is MLPR?
Mobile licence plate recognition technology uses cameras and software to read vehicle licence plates. The system records plate numbers along with the date, time and location of detection.
Why is Council introducing MLPR?
The technology will be used to support:
- Improved compliance with parking and traffic regulations
- Enhanced community safety and traffic management
- Enhanced safety of Council officers
- More efficient use of Council’s resources
MLPR will not be used for general surveillance and will only operate for traffic and parking management.
Privacy and Data Protection
As with all Council functions, protecting your privacy is a priority. All data collected through MLPR will be:
- Managed in accordance with relevant privacy and data protection legislation
- Stored securely and accessed only by authorised personnel
- Only retained in accordance with the State Records Act where enforcement action is taken.
