Where it all Started:
In 2011, Strathfield Council passed a resolution for a Sister City Relationship with Gapyeong County, in the province of Gyeonggido, Republic of South Korea.
A signed agreement were drawn and was signed by the Strathfield Council Mayor at that time and the Gapyeong County Mayor on the 22 August 2011.
Council’s objectives for its Sister City Program are:
- Civic exchanges
- Cultural, sporting and education exchanges
- Commerce and trade exchanges
- Encouraging interaction and involvement between the young people of each region.
Strathfield Council Sister City with Gapyeong County:
Over the years, Strathfield Council and Gapyeong County have exchanged in various activities and programs that incorporate our agreed objectives. Between 2014-2019 Gapyeong County Schools have participated in the HSC Artwork Exhibition that Council coordinates with all local High Schools. Each year, a youth delegation visits from Gapyeong to visit schools and to learn what the Youths of Strathfield occupy themselves with. Furthermore, Gapyeong County and Strathfield sends a delegation, rotating each year, for exchange in culture and education. Strathfield Council also participated in the Gapyeong 60th Commemoration Digital Photographic Exhibition Anniversary of the Korean-Australian Diplomatic Friendship at both the National and Local level, as well as the Armistice of the Korean War 70th Photo Exhibition which was exhibited in Strathfield Council Library and Innovation Hub.
Flood Appeal for Gapyeong
In August 2025, Strathfield Council launched a Flood Appeal to support Gapyeong’s recovery. This was an opportunity for residents, businesses, schools, community groups and supporters across Australia, to come together and help rebuild lives in our Sister City. All funds raised went directly towards relief and rebuilding in Gapyeong.
