Investigation work on Australia Ave, Underwood Rd & Homebush Bay Drive

The Australian and NSW governments are investing $200 million to upgrade the intersection of Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road to ease congestion, increase safety, and improve travel times and connectivity to Sydney Olympic Park and Homebush for all road users.

What work is being undertaken?

Transport for NSW will carry out investigation work on Australia Avenue, Underwood Road and Homebush Bay Drive on and off ramps.

Additional work will also be carried out at Bicentennial Drive, Shirley Strickland Avenue, Rod Laver Drive and at Bicentennial and Bressington parks.

Work activities include locating above and below ground utilities. To carry out underground utility investigations we will need to excavate sections of the footpath and road surface.

These sections will be temporarily filled in after each shift and permanently restored before project completion.

Further information on the project location is shown on the map below.

When will staff be working?

Work will be undertaken across 30 day shifts and 6 night shifts between Wednesday 3 September and Sunday 19 October 2025, weather permitting.

Day work hours will be between Monday and Friday, 7am to 6pm.

Night work hours will be between Sunday and Thursday, 8pm and 5am, the next day.

Work will be paused on Friday nights, Saturdays or when there are planned major events at Sydney Olympic Park and Monday 6 October public holiday.

What will this mean for you and how it will be managed?

Some of the work needs to be carried out at night to minimise disruption to traffic and reduce safety risks to our workers, pedestrians and motorists.

It may be noisy at times, but impact will be minimised by:

  • turning off equipment and vehicles when not in use
  • completing noisier tasks by midnight
  • using quieter equipment where possible.

Traffic changes

There will be temporary traffic changes to make sure the work zone is safe. These changes could include lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h.

Pedestrian access will be maintained under the guidance of traffic controllers. Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.

Transport for NSW thanks the community for their patience while we complete this important work.
