June 14 – Strathfield Council announces new prizes for the Cooks River Fun Run

14 June 2013

With just over a week to go to the 2013 Cooks River Fun Run, Strathfield Council is pleased to announce a new range of prizes for the event.

The male and female winner of the 10km event will each receive a $150 gift voucher for Northside Runners, and the male and female winner of the 5km event will each receive a $100 voucher for the Athletes Foot Burwood. Winners of each age category will receive a prize pack donated by event sponsor Anytime Fitness North Strathfield. A lucky draw prize for all participants will take place at the event.

Now in its fourth year, the run has been increasing in popularity with runners and the local community. The Burwood based running club, Woodstock Runners have had a good presence at the event in previous years, and club president Martin Amy expects a similar turnout in 2013.

“It’s great to have a fun run right on our doorstop and be involved in an event in the local community. The flat course offers a perfect opportunity to run a PB and prepare for the big races coming up in July and August. We have several members who have entered and are looking forward to the run this year,” he said.

With over 250 participants already registered for the race, Council is aiming to exceed last year’s 421 entrants.

The fun run course takes in the foreshore of the Cooks River along the Bay to Bay cycleway and is a great event for the whole family at just $30 for adults and $25 for children.

The Cooks River Fun Run is pleased to support Bowel Cancer Australia, June being Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. All runners will receive a free red apple pin and free apples after the run provided by Bowel Cancer Australia. $5 from each entry is donated to assist with research and community awareness.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Gulian Vaccari is encouraging those who enjoying running or walking to get involved.

“Strathfield Council is pleased to host an event which encourages a healthy lifestyle and supports an important cause,” Cr Vaccari said.

“With the addition of the new 2km kids run, the Cooks River Fun Run really is an event for the whole family. I look forward to seeing many runners and walkers enjoying an active Sunday morning along the Cooks River.”

Late registrations will be accepted on race day from 6:40-8.40am. Presentations will follow the race from 9.20am. A free shuttle bus will be available to transport participants and spectators from Strathfield Station to and from Freshwater Park from 6:45am.
