February 25 – Strathfield to celebrate International Women’s Day

25 February 2011

International Women’s Day will celebrate 100 years in 2011 and Strathfield Council will join the celebration on Tuesday 8 March in Strathfield Town Centre with giveaways and a free morning tea.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th across the world and is a day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements, regardless of divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

If you are in Strathfield Square on Tuesday morning from 7.30am you can receive an International Women’s Day purple ribbon sticker, purchased by Strathfield Council and a free cupcake. The funds raised from the purchase of ribbons will be directed towards the International Women’s Day Project which will promote female political participation and leadership.

Along with the cupcake giveaways, Strathfield Council will hold a free morning tea from 10am with special guest speakers and stallholders from local community organisations.

Strathfield Council’s Deputy Mayor, Hope Brett-Bowen said International Women’s Day is a great celebration and recognition of women in leadership roles and those working to support the rights of women around the world.

“It is important to have a day to recognise the achievements of women and the advancements in equality. Female councillors and females on company boards are still a minority even in Australia, so it is still a relevant day and a very worthwhile celebration,” Cr Brett-Bowen said.

For women around the world, International Women’s Day symbolises how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilise for meaningful change and Strathfield Council is proud to be a part of this celebration.
