Congratulations to our Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year

For immediate release
29 January 2018

The Judging Panel at Strathfield Council had their work cut out for them this year with a number of high quality nominations for Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year.

Helen Boyce took out the top honour for her work in several areas of the community, contributing to the wellbeing of local residents from all cultures.

Currently, Helen is Secretary for both the Strathfield School for seniors and the Uniting Church Women’s Fellowship. She also assists with the Strathfield Council HSC Art Exhibition and when required, acts as secretary for the Strathfield South Probus Club.

Helen’s attitude is one of lending a hand and no task is too big. Her work inspires others to volunteer and contribute to the local community.

Leon Rettie was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for his invaluable service to both his school community, and the wider Strathfield Community.

For the past 3 years, Leon has participated as a Tutor in Council’s Technology for Seniors program, assisting older residents to understand and use digital items such as smart phones, computers, email and more. Leon has shown great leadership in this role, often assisting in the organisation of other tutors.

At school, Leon has served on the Student Representative Council for 3 years, providing peer support for younger students. He has also assisted with the organisation of Open Night and Orientation Day, and is currently the Editor for the school newsletter.

Leon is a community minded young man, dedicated to providing support to those around him.

Leon and Helen were presented with their awards by Mayor Gulian Vaccari at the Australia Day event in Strathfield Park.

Council would like to congratulate the winners and all those nominated.
