Strathfield Council has committed a funding contribution of $20,000 to support the WestLine Partnership – Light Rail for Sydney’s Olympic Corridor.

The aim of the WestLine Partnership is to lobby the State government to prioritise the proposed Olympic Park route as the first stage of the Western Sydney Light Rail network.

The proposed route begins at Westmead and connects the Greater Parramatta area with Olympic Park, Rhodes and Strathfield. The Olympic Corridor is among four possible western Sydney light rail routes that have been shortlisted for further investigation.

Strathfield Council has advised the NSW Government of its support for the proposed route along the Olympic Corridor.

The proposed route would link Strathfield with the business and recreation precincts of Parramatta and Olympic Park, and provide transport to support the population growth that will be brought about from an increase in housing density in the area.

A recent report commissioned by the WestLine Partnership found that a light rail service in the Olympic Corridor would create jobs, provide faster transport and service an area that has been earmarked for development.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Gulian Vaccari, noted that the priorities of the WestLine Partnership are in line with Council.

“Strathfield Council is committed to working closely with WestLine on this project, which would provide many positive benefits for our community,” said Cr Vaccari.

“Strathfield Council views the Olympic Corridor light rail link as key to providing transport and access to services for the increased population projected for this area.”

Strathfield Council has joined other local councils in supporting the WestLine Partnership, with the City of Canada Bay and Auburn City Council also contributing $20,000 each to the project. The funding support will assist with studies and strategic engagement related to the project.
