Strathfield Community Choir: History & Background

Who We Are:

The Strathfield Community Choir is a vibrant initiative launched by Strathfield Council to foster connection among local residents, promoting inclusivity and providing a sense of belonging. The program is part of the Council's broader strategy to engage the community, collaborate with partners, and create opportunities for volunteers’ participation.  It aims to reach those who may feel socially isolated, offering a space where music brings people together.

The inaugural choir practice took place on Wednesday 15 May 2019, with 12 enthusiastic individuals joining to explore the joy of singing. Over time, attendance has varied between 8-20 participants each week. Even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the choir continued to meet online for virtual practices, providing members with a sense of camaraderie and fun.

The choir is guided by the talented and dedicated leadership of John and Susan Brown, a retired musical couple who have been instrumental in the choir's growth and success. John, a former vocal coach, and Susan, an active violinist with the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra and a former Musical Director in Community Theatre.  Together, they bring decades of musical expertise and passion and their unwavering commitment as directors contributes significantly to the choir's development. They select a wide range of songs to ensuring smooth coordination and harmony.

Today, the Strathfield Community Choir boasts 145 members, with over 30 active members consistently attending weekly practices. The choir has become a prominent feature in major Strathfield Council events and is excited to participate and perform in various local community gatherings and events throughout the year.
