Sydney Markets to Remain at Flemington into the Foreseeable Future

For immediate release

Strathfield Mayor, Cr Gulian Vaccari met with Sydney Markets CEO Mr Brad Latham this week to voice the concerns of residents over the possibility of Flemington losing the Markets.

Sydney Markets have been in consultation with the NSW Government to investigate opportunities to relocate the Markets within the new Western Sydney Aerotropolis at Badgerys Creek.

Mayor Vaccari said “the Sydney Markets are a vibrant institution in Flemington which provide many economic benefits as well as jobs to the area. Council looks forward to the Markets remaining in occupation at Flemington for many years to come.”

At this week’s meeting, Mr Brad Latham assured Mayor Vaccari thatany relocation plans would not occur for at least 20-30 years and even then would include the Markets keeping some presence at the Flemington site. Mr Latham said “Long term relocation options will only be considered if they stand to support competitive trade, effective distribution, operational excellence and innovation.”

In the longer term, were the Sydney Markets to relocate to Badgerys Creek, it is likely the current 41 hectare site would also incorporate augmented green space and an education precinct amongst other community building initiatives.

Mayor Vaccari has committed to continue to monitor this developing situation on behalf of Strathfield residents.
