Strathfield Highly Commended in LGNSW Environment Awards

Strathfield Council has recently been highly commended in the 2015 Local Government Environment Awards for its work with “Operation weed ‘em out”.

The awards, which were presented Tuesday 1 December, acknowledge the work of NSW councils in relation to their performance in and sustainability of the natural environment.

In 2014-15 Strathfield Council received State Government funding to manage noxious weeds being sold within the Sydney Flower Markets. However, council used this money to go above and beyond its intended expectations with the Noxious Weeds Officer servicing the entire Strathfield LGA, as well as completing property compliance inspections, facilitating stakeholder meetings, weed mapping and community education services.

During this time the Noxious Weed Officer also prepared vital strategic documents including a Weed Management Plan and a Weed Inspection plan up until 2019.

Operation weed ‘em out focussed on eliminating commercial distribution of invasive plant species and promoting best management practice changes toward supplying native, regionally sustainable substitutes.

As part of its community service, Council continually strives towards being a leader in sustainable environmental management.
