Strathfield Council to host empowering women in local government program
Strathfield Council is hosting a program designed to empower women who are looking to take on a role in local government.
The program has been developed by the UTS Centre for Local Government and the NSW Australian Local Government Women’s Association, and aims to support women considering running in the 2016 Local Government elections and women working within the NSW Local Government sector.
Statistics show that women remain significantly under-represented in local government at both an elected level and senior management level.
This program covers material designed to assist women with understanding local government, becoming professional leaders and campaign logistics, to provide practical skills to assist with increasing female representation in local government.
The first course in the program begins on October 23, and will be hosted by Strathfield Council.
Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Gulian Vaccari noted the importance of the program.
“This program provides a great opportunity to learn about the role of local government officials, and gain key information on how best to prepare for gaining a role as a Councillor. Strathfield is proud to host this program, and I hope many women attend as the first step to a career in local government,” Cr Vaccari said.
The program will be officially launched at UTS on Thursday, 8 October 2015 at Aerial Function Centre, Level 7, UTS Building 10, 235 Jones Street, Ultimo at 6-8pm.
All women who are considering standing for Council elections in 2016 are encouraged to attend the launch for more information on the program.
