Strathfield Celebrates International Women’s Day

Strathfield Council celebrated International Women’s Day on Tuesday, 8 March, in the Strathfield Town Hall. The morning tea was attended by a number of local students and teachers and was aimed at raising awareness for women’s equality.

The morning tea featured a range of prominent guest speakers who presented on a range of hard-hitting women’s issues. Speakers included Elizabeth Ralston Sydney FC defender, Fatima Kourouche from the Olive Tree Network – a women’s support group, and Bindi Bennett 1 of 20 aboriginal PhD recipients and lecturer at the Australian Catholic University.

Each of the keynote speakers covered topics that resounded with the female audience members such as issues in the workplace, how to deal with relationships and striving to reach your goals.

International Women’s Day is celebrated to draw attention to the social, political, economic, cultural and sporting achievements of women all over the world. The theme for 2016 was Pledge for Parity.

“The World Economic Forum has predicted that we won’t completely close the gender gap until 2133. This shows the importance of events, so we can work together to bring the gender gap to a close sooner”, Mayor of Strathfield, Councillor Ok said.

Strathfield Council supports International Women’s Day and is abides by Equal Employment Opportunity laws.
