Strathfield Celebrates International Women’s Day

For immediate release

8 March 2018

Strathfield Council hosted local residents, business women, community groups and leaders to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March 2018.

The morning tea featured speeches by two extraordinary women.

Fiona Lang, Chief Operating Officer of BBC Worldwide ANZ and board member of UN Women National Committee Australia, spoke to the theme of the national day “Leave No Woman Behind.” In a natural disaster women and girls are 14 times more likely to die. Fiona shed light on issues facing women and girls in disaster and war stricken countries and the incredible work UN Women do to assist them.

Ramia Sultan, lawyer at Hills Legal and member of the Executive Committee of the Gaza Children’s Fund Inc, delivered a powerful speech with examples of women who have been left behind. Ramia reminded guests that the issues facing women are varied from the mother forced to choose between work and staying with a child, the woman trying to break through the ‘glass ceiling’ or the women fighting for freedom in Gaza.

Mayor Gulian Vaccari, Deputy Mayor Nella Hall, and Councillors Karen Pensabene, Stephanie Kokkolis and Maryanne Duggan were in attendance. Mayor Vaccari delivered a speech in which he expressed his pride in being a part of the first Strathfield Council which features a majority of women.

The event was a great success with many guests expressing their inspiration for a better tomorrow for women everywhere.
