September 18 – Strathfield Council encourages residents to join the Garage Sale Trail

18 September 2013

Strathfield Council is encouraging residents looking to dispose of household items to participate in the annual Garage Sale Trail event on October 26.

Founded four years ago, Garage Sale Trail is a program that helps communities around Australia hold garage sales on the same day. The program is a joint effort across the country to dispose of items that are no longer needed without sending them to landfill.

Since its commencement, Garage Sale Trail has found new homes for one million items headed for potential landfill, helped raise $3 million in local fundraising and helped 800,000 people to meet their neighbours.

People who register to hold a garage sale can advertise their sale on the program’s website. Bargain hunters can search for items they want to buy and make a treasure trail to map out the sales they plan to visit on the day.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Daniel Bott is encouraging Strathfield residents to get involved.

“Garage Sale Trail is a fantastic initiative with valuable benefits to the environment and the community. Strathfield residents who participate in the event can make a positive contribution to reducing landfill while getting to know people in their local area,” Cr Bott said.

“Strathfield Council is committed to providing positive waste management solutions. I encourage residents who hold a garage sale to utilise Council’s on call clean up service to dispose of any unsold items following the sale.”

Strathfield residents are entitled to three on call clean up collections per year.
