September 12 – New playground for Greenacre residents

12 September 2013

Strathfield Council will launch a community activation project in Greenacre with a community barbecue to officially open a new playground in Drew Street on Saturday 21 September.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Daniel Bott said he is keen to ensure Council is paying attention to residents in all parts of the LGA.

“The community barbecue and new playground is part of a number of Council initiatives to support the community of this small pocket of residential houses in the southern most part of the Strathfield LGA,” Cr Bott said.

These initiatives include the construction of a brand new playground and associated landscaping works at Drew St Playground, liaison with NSW Police and relevant state departments to increase presence in the area and the installation of speed cushions on nearby Matthews and Webber Streets to assist local traffic conditions.

Improvements were also made to the raingardens in the Drew Street medium strip constructed by Council 2010 to treat stormwater from the residential area before it enters Coxs Creek and the Cooks River.

The community event on Saturday 21 September will see the launch of a community art project with artist Mazin Ahmed.

Ahmed will seek community input into the design of a mural at the playground that will enable all who use the park to feel their community is reflected in the mural.

Along with the free barbecue, children’s activities including facepainting and a balloon artist will entertain the children and interest will be sought from any residents interested in joining a local National Heart Foundation walking group.

“I would like to encourage the residents of Drew St, Matthews St and Webber St to come along on Saturday, meet one another, engage with their community and becoming active in the initiatives Council are proposing. A sense of community can only be created with active participation.”
