As a recipient of the NSW Government’s 2021 Greening our City grant, Strathfield Council will plant 456 trees in Strathfield South and Greenacre. Planting for this project is scheduled to commence in April 2022 and conclude by May 2022.

The project target areas have been identified as already experiencing the adverse impacts of canopy loss and the project will improve local resilience to future climate change. Tree planting has shown to be one of the most effective ways to cool urban suburbs, and this project seeks to alleviate urban heating in areas of the Strathfield LGA that need it most.

The benefits of street tree planting programs are extensive:

  • Help reduce urban heat
  • Provide cooler and greener pathways for walking and cycling
  • Improve air quality
  • Absorb pollutants and reduce rainwater runoff
  • Improve landscape character which in turn enhances a greater sense of community
  • Increase the value of residential and commercial property by providing views of trees and lower level greenery
