Fitzgerald Park Playground Upgrade

The Strathfield 2025 Community Strategic Plan outlines a commitment of ‘Liveable Neighbourhoods’ which will have high quality sustainable innovative playground development.

As part of this undertaking we routinely review playgrounds to identify current and future demand for upgrade or new playgrounds for the local community. This review of the playground at Fitzgerald Park, Homebush was identified as needing an upgrade.

Current activities and objectives for playgrounds include:

•   To make Councils playgrounds more exciting and innovative

•   To cater for a wider age group

•   To implement inclusive/all ability playgrounds

•   To provide activities for teenagers and youth

•   Provide a wider range of activities and experiences

•   To continue to improve safety and lower risk

Strathfield's playgrounds provide both physical and intellectual activities encouraging children to learn and grow, developing their minds and bodies in a safe and fun environment.

The playground will see an upgrade to the area with new equipment, shade structure, fencing and soft fall rubber.

A copy of the design plans are located at the bottom of this page. Planning is underway for construction of the playground, and is expected to commence mid May 2017 (weather pending).

About Fizgerald Park

Fitzgerald Park is a highly popular neighbourhood park designed as an integral feature of the surrounding residential area, providing recreation opportunities and enhancement of local amenity and streetscape.  The objective of this park is provision of safe play areas especially for children under surveillance of adults.  This park features a dedicated children’s playground.

Fitzgerald Park is named in honour of James Fitzgerald who was Strathfield Council’s Overseer of Works [1888 - 1918].  Council minutes of 27 June 1920 record the dedication:

‘That a noticeboard be erected at the entrance as under. Viz. FITZGERALD PARK AND CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND’…Named in recognition of the sterling worth and kindly disposition of the Late James Fitzgerald, Works Overseer, of the Strathfield Municipality for 25 years’.
