The new Strathfield Local Environmental Plan, which sets the strategic direction for how Council will manage Strathfield’s growth over the next 10 years has been approved by the NSW Government and will come into effect from 29 March 2013.
Strathfield’s new LEP was developed in consultation with the community in 2012 and will inform all planning decisions from 29 March through zoning and development standards.
Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Gulian Vaccari is pleased to see the LEP process come to a point of completion.
“After a thorough community engagement exercise in 2012 and going through the Department’s rigorous planning process, I am pleased to see the final LEP come to fruition.
“The new Strathfield LEP will deliver significant benefits for the community, importantly, the protection of Strathfield’s low density residential and heritage areas and environmentally sensitive sites,” Cr Vaccari said.
The Department of Planning and Infrastructure under the delegations of the Planning Minister have made some amendments in the final LEP which differ from the draft version that Council submitted to the Department in August 2012.
“The LEP is developed and drafted by Council taking into consideration the submissions made by the community, but the final approval rests with the NSW Government. In this case, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure have made some changes which differ from the draft version. As a result, I encourage all residents to check the LEP maps and to stay informed,” Cr Vaccari said.
The plan sets out for residential and economic growth focused around Strathfield’s commercial centres and corridors, particularly the Parramatta Road corridor, to meet State Government’s residential targets by allowing for an additional 1830 new dwellings in Strathfield over the next 10 years and creating employment opportunities.
A key highlight is the creation of a food hub and new Enterprise Corridor zone surrounding the Sydney Markets.
The Strathfield LEP which includes the written instrument and maps is available at the NSW Legislation website.
The new Strathfield LEP replaces all of Council’s previous planning instruments including the Strathfield Planning Scheme Ordinance which will be repealed on 29 March 2013.
