4 January 2013
Strathfield Council would like to encourage residents to be aware of the Roads and Maritime Services new free vehicle registration check service online at myrta.com.
Changes to the NSW registration requirements from 1 January 2013 mean registration stickers are no longer required for light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes.
The removal of stickers means residents who suspect a vehicle has been abandoned on a local street can still check the registration of the vehicle by using a simple online service or mobile phone application.
The abandonment of a vehicle is an offence under the Impounding Act 1993. When a vehicle is left unattended on any public road, members of the public can report the details to their local council. Before reporting the vehicle, residents can easily check to see if the vehicle is currently registered by using the free vehicle registration check and entering the number plate details.
Any car that is suspected to have been abandoned should still be reported to Council by calling customer service on 9748 9999. Council will make inquiries and issue a notice before removing the vehicle within 10 days.
Motorists can also easily check the status of their vehicle registration or a vehicle being sold using the online service at myrta.com.
