Strathfield Council has received a Highly Commended award at the 2012 Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards in the Water Conservation category for the Hudson Park Golf Course Sustainability Project.
The Hudson Park Golf Course Sustainability Project saw major upgrades at Council’s Hudson Park Golf Course, including the installation of a revolutionary new turf which will deliver potential savings of up to 12,000 kilolitres and $40,000 annually.
Mayor of Strathfield, Gulian Vaccari said the award is recognition of Council’s commitment not only for this particular project but also to sustainable practices.
“This award is a great acknowledgement of not only Council’s work in improving efficiencies and saving water at Council facilities but also of the ways in which Council is striving for innovation in the delivery of all our services by introducing sustainability measures,” Cr Vaccari said.
“The Hudson Park Golf Course project has gone a long way to meet Council’s water reduction targets and is already delivering cost savings whilst reducing the environmental impacts associated with maintaining a golf course. I commend the achievements of this project.”
The Hudson Park Golf Course project involved the returfing of all 20 greens to a new Australian-first drought resistant turf species, irrigation upgrades and landscaping works as part of Sydney Water’s Irrigation and Landscape Efficiency Project (ILEP) and a $62,500 Federal Government grant toward to total cost of the project.
The new paspalum turf species allows for significant reductions in water, chemical and fertiliser consumption and increases the reliability and playability of the course by maintaining good playing conditions through the hottest and coldest months of the year.
The estimated water savings are 12,000 kilolitres each year, which, coupled with the reduction in chemical usage and subsequent operational costs, will see a potential annual saving of $40,000.
