Strathfield’s first community garden at Laker Reserve is one step closer to becoming a reality with the release of two concept plans for community voting.
Laker Reserve is located on Elva Street in Strathfield and is the location for the development of Council’s first community garden, with community consultation for garden designs well underway.
The release of two concept plans is the culmination of feedback that was received about features of the garden, including plot types, herb gardens, a rainwater tank, compost bins and a meeting area.
A community discussion session will be held on Tuesday 14 May at 6.30pm in Strathfield Library for interested local residents to view the concept plans and have a say in the final garden design. Once a design is selected, the construction phase can begin.
“So far, we’ve had a great response, with more than 60 people signed up to the group mailing list and many attending the information sessions. Based on the feedback of this group about inclusions in the garden, Council have created two plans, a formal design and an informal design. Now it’s up to the community to decide which design will go ahead,” Council’s Project Officer Sue Stevens said.
Community gardens enable community members, especially those without access to gardening space, to be actively involved in growing vegetables, fruit and herbs.
“People are excited for the opportunity to enjoy an open space garden area, grow healthy food for very little cost and come together with their neighbours. Laker Reserve’s proximity to Strathfield station and high density apartment blocks makes it ideal for a shared garden space and I look forward to seeing the garden develop and grow,” Cr Gulian Vaccari, Mayor of Strathfield said.
