Kerbside Bins & Collection
Council provides the following Domestic Waste Collection Services to all residential properties in Strathfield.
Single Dwelling Houses, Townhouses, Dual Occupancies, and Villas receive the following service:
- 120L general waste bin (red lid) – collected weekly
- 240L recycling bin (yellow lid) – collected fortnightly
- 240L garden organics bin (lime green lid) – collected fortnightly
Multi Unit Dwellings receive the following service:
- 240L general waste bin (red lid) – collected weekly, shared between 2 units
- 240L recycling bin (yellow lid) – collected fortnightly, shared between 2 units
Fees and charges associated with Council’s Domestic Waste Collection Services are charged directly to your rates account. Charges for additional services such as replacement bins are set out in Council’s Fees and Charges.

Please note:
- Additional bin services ARE NOT available for multi unit dwellings.
- Council does not provide services for commercial venues such as shops and boarding houses. Those venues need to hire a private contractor for collection. Find more on our Business Waste Management and Resource Recovery Guidelines
Kerbside bins should:
- Be a maximum of 1 metre from the kerb with the front of the bin to the kerb. The bin handles should be facing your property
- Be at least 50 centimetres apart
- Be at least 1 metre clear of adjacent trees or parked cars
- Be in good condition, clean and with proper lids on
- Not be overfilled – lids must be completely shut
- Be returned to your property as soon as possible, once they have been emptied
Failure to present any of the three waste bins correctly on 3 or more occasions may result in a ‘refusal of service’. Council staff will notify you by letter on the day of the incident if you have failed to present your bin correctly. Records of each incident will be kept by Council’s Waste Services staff. A household will be given three warnings in regards to incorrect bin presentation before the service is refused.
Please ensure you place materials in the correct bin. Waste will only be collected if placed out in Council approved bins. Any waste placed out in bags or non-standard bins will not be collected and will be considered ‘dumped rubbish’. Illegally dumping rubbish is a serious offence and subject to fines under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997.

Materials ACCEPTED in your General Waste Bin
- Soft plastics (including plastic bags, bin liners, food packaging)
- Food waste
- Nappies and hygiene products
- Packing foam
- Meat trays
- General rubbish items
- Home administered medical waste (NOT INCLUDING ANY SHARPS)

Materials NOT ACCEPTED in your General Waste Bin
- Building or construction materials
- Soils, rocks, garden vegetation
- Sharps (including syringes)
- Car parts
- Gas bottles
- Recyclables
- Hazardous waste (including batteries, paint chemicals)
Your yellow lid recycling bin is collected fortnightly on the same day as your garbage collection. Use your Waste Calendar to check when your next collection will be.
To recycle correctly:
- Remove lids from bottles and containers and give them a quick rinse before placing them in the recycling bin.
- Flatten plastic and cardboard containers to make more space in your recycling bin.
- Tear large cardboard items into smaller pieces to prevent them from getting stuck in the bin.
- DO NOT put items in plastic bags, as they cannot be recycled.
Materials ACCEPTED in your Yellow Recycling Bin:
- Plastic bottles and containers marked “1” to “7”
- Glass bottles and jars
- Aluminium and steel cans (including empty aerosol cans)
- Paper (including newspapers, magazines, telephone books)
- Milk and juice cartons (including liquid paper board)
- Cardboard (including empty pizza boxes)
- Egg cartons
Materials NOT ACCEPTED in your Yellow Recycling Bin:
- Soft plastics (including plastic bags, bin liners, food packaging)
- Neon tubes or light globes
- Plate glass
- Medical waste (including syringes)
- Polystyrene
- Nappies and hygiene products
- Car parts
- Household waste (including food scraps)
- Garden vegetation
- Lids from bottles and jars
- Textiles
- Hazardous waste (including batteries, paint chemicals)
Your green lid garden vegetation bin is collected fortnightly on the alternative week to your recycling bin. Use your Waste Calendar to check which fortnight.
This service is offered to single dwelling households and townhouse developments only.
The garden vegetation material collected by Council is either processed into compost and mulch products for agricultural and horticultural use or used as biofuel to produce green electricity.

- Grass clippings
- Leaves
- Pruning
- Flowers
- Small twigs and branches
- Weeds
- Bush and hedge trimmings
Materials NOT ACCEPTED in your Green Garden Vegetation Bin
- Plastic bags or bin liners
- Food waste
- Household waste
- Recyclables
- Soil or rocks
- Medical waste (including waste)
- Building or construction waste
- Tree stumps or large branches
- Treated or painted timber
- Garden tools
- Flower pots
If you have extra vegetation to dispose you can also access Council’s Free Clean Up Collection Service. This service accepts branches, plants, clippings, mulch, etc., up to 1 metre long and 15 cm in diameter. Loose items must be bundled and securely tied.

Stolen, lost or damaged bins must be reported to Council through Customer Service on 9748 9999.
Repairing damaged bins, such as fixing damaged lids and wheels, is free of charge. Stolen or lost bin replacement can incur a fee.
Replacement bins can be ordered by printing and completing the Waste Bin Application Form below. Return the forms to Council by facsimile, mail or in person.
Payment for replacement bins must be made to Council prior to delivery and can be made by:
- By cash to our Customer Service Advisers
- By credit card – over the phone or in person to a Council Customer Service Adviser. Visa and Mastercard are accepted
- By Eftpos at Council’s Customer Service Centre
- By cheque made payable to Strathfield Council and crossed NOT NEGOTIABLE
