June 25 – 2014 Cooks River Fun Run raises $2995 for Bowel Cancer Australia

25 June 2014

Strathfield Council’s Cooks River Fun Run returned for a successful fifth year on Sunday 22 June, raising a record amount for charity partner Bowel Cancer Australia.

The event saw over 400 participants register for the 5km, 10km and 2km kids run, with the kids run seeing more than double the participants from its inaugural year in 2013.

The event supported Bowel Cancer Australia for the second time, with $5 from each entry donated to assist with education and community awareness as part of Bowel Cancer Awareness month initiatives. A barbecue run by major sponsor Devine Real Estate raised $750 for Bowel Cancer Australia, bringing the total raised from the event to $2995 – over $400 more than was raised last year.

In the 10km female race, Lauren Hamilton of Cremorne set a new course record with 36:13. The male events were dominated by three time participant, Jake Stollery of Dee Why, who took line honours in both the 5km and 10km races.

The event received positive feedback from runners across Sydney, who enjoyed the fast course, free giveaways and the group warm up before both runs.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Daniel Bott, said the strong turnout for the event was great example of the importance placed on an active lifestyle.

“It is great that so many runners and walkers take part in the Cooks River Fun Run each year, and especially exciting to see more kids participating in the 2km event. I enjoyed seeing the smiling faces and positive spirit shown by so many people, it is a genuine feel-good event,” Cr Bott said.

“The Fun Run is a positive way to promote healthy lifestyles in the community and is fantastic preparation for people training for bigger races. Each year, we’ve seen growth and expansion of the event, so I look forward to many more successful Cooks River Fun Runs in future years.”
