June 10 – Council depot destroyed by fire

10 June 2012
Strathfield Council’s main depot building has been destroyed after it was gutted by fire on Saturday night (9 June).
While nobody was hurt in the blaze, Council equipment in the building was destroyed. The fire also destroyed equipment belonging to the Strathfield SES, who had temporarily relocated to the building after their facility was also destroyed by fire in 2008.
Police and the fire brigade have cordoned off the depot and are treating the fire suspiciously.
Mayor of Strathfield Paul Barron said, while it was still early days, Council was working on a plan to temporarily relocate Council staff and the SES.
“We’re obviously all in shock after the fire, but I’m just glad nobody was hurt,” he said.
“We’re currently working on a plan to temporarily relocate Council staff to one of our other facilities and ensure that Council’s services are in no way affected despite the fire.”
Cr Barron also said Council would work with the SES regarding relocating their headquarters. He said though unfinished, the SES may be able to locate to their new purpose built facility, which is also located at the depot site.
“We’ll obviously work closely with the SES regarding temporary relocation and though unfinished, one option may be to relocate the SES to their new building, but we’ll have to see what needs to be done in order to get that up and running.”
