International Women’s Day

Leave No Woman Behind

International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on 8th March and is an opportunity to reflect on the progress of empowering women and girls, and plan for the future.

Join Strathfield Council as we celebrate incredible women in our local area, as well as gain inspiration for a more equal tomorrow.

Speakers:

Ramia Sultan is a lawyer, activist, wife, and mother of 3 girls.

Ramia was born and raised in Australia and is also of Palestinian heritage. She recently set up her own legal practice in Chullora along with two female lawyers. Hills Legal Group pride themselves on service that is culturally competent when dealing with diverse clients. Through her legal work, Ramia integrates modern technology with traditional and religious values.

Ramia has completed her Masters in Islamic Studies at Charles Sturt University, and is currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Gaza Children’s Fund Inc., a not for profit humanitarian organisation seeking to aid and empower women and children in Gaza. Ramia also volunteers as mentor to young women.

Her devotion to the betterment of the lives of girls and women is the embodiment of the International Women’s Day concept, “Leave No Woman Behind”.

Fiona Lang currently works full time as the Chief Operating Officer of BBC Worldwide ANZ. In this role Fiona is responsible for strategy, business development operations and legal. Prior to joining BBC Worldwide, Fiona worked both at Herbert Smith Freehills and Gilbert & Tobin as a corporate lawyer specialising in mergers and acquisitions and corporate advisory.

Fiona Lang is an experienced and qualified board member, having served on the board of the not-for profit company, ‘Women For Election Australia’. This entity aims to address the low participation of women in elected office and leadership positions through training and development programs.

Fiona is a mentor of ‘The Women’s College Sydney University Mentor Programme’ and has worked with ‘The Dream Collective’ on several initiatives. She is often invited to speak at conferences addressing the needs of women in leadership roles in corporations.

Fiona has completed a diploma of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a graduate diploma in Applied Finance (FINSA) and bachelor degrees in Law and Economics at the University of Sydney.

In 2016, Fiona was appointed to the Board of UN Women National Committee Australia.
