Important Update – Council Response to COVID-19

For immediate release

1 April 2020

Strathfield Council is continuously updating its efforts in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and its support of the community during the current health emergency. With this in mind, Council has implemented additional new measures to protect and assist the community:

  • Council’s Customer Service Centre hours have changed and will now only be open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am – 2pm. Customer Service staff will still be available by contacting 02 9748 9999 or council@strathfield.nsw.gov.au
  • The Strathfield Connector bus service is running on a reduced timetable, arriving at bus stops every 60 minutes, between 8:00am – 5:00pm.
  • Council has introduced measures to ease financial burdens including free of charge inspections of food premises. Additionally, anyone experiencing financial hardship in regards to transactions with Council, is encouraged to call Council to discuss options best suited to their situation on 9748 9999.
  • Waste Collection services are running as usual. Residents are reminded to only place their bins out for collection the night before, and to retrieve them off the street as soon as possible after collection.
  • Closure of Council parks, playgrounds, sporting fields, outdoor fitness equipment, Strathfield Library and community centres.
  • Cancellations of Council programs and events such as ANZAC Day, 2020 Homebush Village Fair and 2020 Cooks River Fun Run.

Council has implemented two programs to support the vulnerable in our community and local businesses at this time:

  • The Neighbour2Neighbour Program connects vulnerable residents with neighbours who are in a position to help. For those residents requiring assistance, a hotline is now open on Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 5:00pm, and can be reached by calling 02 9748 9939.  For residents who are in a position to help by donating essential items or by giving the gift of their time, please email n2n@strathfield.nsw.gov.au
  • Be Local Buy Local aims to provide assistance to small businesses within the Strathfield LGA. The Strathfield community is encouraged to spend a minimum of $150 with local businesses to go in the draw to win a $100 debit card.

Council reminds residents that good hygiene, staying at home, and practicing social distancing by leaving a space of 1.5m between people is the best way to reduce the risk of COVID-19.
