February 3 – Camden Lodge fire

3 February 2012

A heritage property in Burlington Road, Homebush was damaged by fire on the evening of Monday 30 January.

The heritage listed property, also known as Camden Lodge, is currently unoccupied and the Police investigation into the fire is continuing.

Mayor of Strathfield Cr Paul Barron said the fire is devastating.

“Camden Lodge is a landmark in the Homebush area and this fire is a tragedy for such a well known and significant heritage property,” Cr Barron said.

“Strathfield is renowned for its heritage properties and a number of local residents have expressed their disappointment and devastation at this occurrence.”

A development application for the demolition of the property and construction of a single storey dwelling was lodged to Council in 2010.

The Development Application was refused by Council at the September meeting due to the property being a heritage item with significant contributions to the setting, history and aesthetic characteristics of the adjoining heritage conservation precinct according to the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

Council will await for the Police investigation to conclude before any inspections and actions can be taken.
