Mayor’s Message – Bush Fire Crisis
I would like to express my sympathy to all those who have been affected by the ongoing bush fire crisis. I know many of our community have friends and family directly impacted and all of us are distressed by the utter devastation we have witnessed.
We are all extremely grateful for the efforts of the Rural Fire Service and emergency services who are continuing to operate in dangerous conditions and have faced unprecedented threats to life, property, and the environment.
The public health, environmental and financial impact of the bush fires will be felt for many years to come. At this stage Council is focusing on how we can help with the recovery effort.
I am proud to say that Strathfield Council was the first to register an offer of assistance to the Office of Local Government Bush fire Recovery Coordination Group (BRCG). Council has offered approximately $200,000 of in-kind resources to the BRCG to assist with the recovery effort. Council has also offered disaster recovery and WHS expertise to the group.
I would like to express my gratitude to Council staff who have volunteered to be deployed to assist in the recovery effort. This is an unprecedented event which will require an unprecedented response from all layers of government. Over the coming weeks Council will continue to review and revise our support efforts in conjunction with the BRCG.
I understand that Strathfield is a generous community and many of you have asked how you can reach out to help affected communities.
Direct cash donations would also be warmly welcomed to the NSW Rural Fire Service
Cr Antoine Doueihi
Mayor of Strathfield Council
