Cedar Tree Planting in Strathfield Park

For immediate release

15 October 2020

Strathfield Council planted a cedar tree at Strathfield Park this morning in memory of the lives lost during the Beirut explosion in August.

Strathfield Councillors were accompanied by His Excellency, Mr Charbel Macaron, Consul General of Lebanon in Sydney; Msgr Marcelino Youssef, Vicar General of the Maronite Eparchy of Australia; Mr Michel Doueihi, President of the World Lebanese Cultural Union Regional Council; Mr Greg Read SC, President of the Cumberland RSL Sub-branch and other distinguished guests.

Shortly after the devastating explosion on 4 August, Council set up an online condolence page, inviting the local community to express their sympathies. In no time at all, members of the Strathfield community displayed their support, thoughts and prayers for each victim, their families, friends and loved ones.

On behalf of the Strathfield community, Mayor Antoine Doueihi presented the Consul General of Lebanon with the Condolence Book, which is hoped to be a source of comfort to those affected by a terrible disaster.
