This photo taken by Milton Kent shows the construction of Pemberton Street, Strathfield in 1947. Several children are eagerly observing the progress of the workmen. The work was funded by a special government loan of £34,000 to Strathfield Council for road and drain building.

Pemberton Street was first subdivided in 1916 as part of the Flemington Heights Estate by the Intercolonial Investment Land & Building Co. This included the section on the eastern side of the road between Arthur Street and Shortland Avenue – then named Allan Street.

Richardson and Wrench advertised the 44 lots for sale during August 1916. Not all lots sold immediately but The Sydney Morning Herald of 18 September reported that prices had started at £2 per foot.[1]

Further subdivision – of the western side of the road – took place in 1920, however valuation lists show that by 1924 only 13 cottages had been built. Some of these were still owned at that time by the Intercolonial Investment Land & Building Co.

From Six Maps, 1943 showing the Flemington Heights Estate. Pemberton Street can be seen in the centre, running vertically from Arthur Street down to Shortland Avenue, four years before the roadworks.

Allan Street became part of Shortland Avenue in 1939.[2] The remainder of Pemberton Street, below Shortland Avenue, was still sparsely settled at this time. Today’s Myall Crescent was subdivided during the 1960s.
