August 27 – Strathfield Library launches $100,000 state-of-the-art technology upgrade

27 August 2014

Strathfield Library has recently completed a $100,000 technology upgrade with the installation of Radio Frequency Identification Data (RFID) and new self-service machines, the first of their kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Strathfield Council received a $68,989 State Library Development Grant in 2013 for the implementation of RFID technology, and installed the state-of-the-art self-check machines and automatic returns shelf in addition to the grant in order to maximise the benefit of the new technology.

RFID technology allows for identification of tracking tags, and is used to streamline library processes by attaching tags to all 61,058 library items to replace manual barcode scanning. The tag contains information to allow for inventory management, self-service checkout and automated returns and security of library items.

Tags can be read through the cover of a book or DVD, eliminating the need to open individual items to scan, and multiple tags can be read simultaneously, increasing efficiency and streamlining processes.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Daniel Bott is excited to launch the new technology.

“Strathfield Library is focused on identifying new methods to provide the highest level of service to library users. These new self-check machines mean library members can scan items themselves and return items instantly, giving increased autonomy and efficiency for the community who frequent the library,” Cr Bott said.

“The new technology makes interacting with the library easier for all who visit and enables staff to prioritise customer service and developing library programs, for a more enjoyable overall library experience.”

The installation of the RFID technology and self-service machines was completed in May, and will be officially unveiled at a launch event with Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Daniel Bott on Friday 29 August at 10.30am. The event will include a short demonstration of the technology.
