August 2 – National Tree Day success at Strathfield

2 August 2011

New life has been born at Dean Reserve in Strathfield South on National Tree Day with over 1600 small trees and shrubs planted by the community.

A great day was had by all who came along and volunteered to plant trees, many working for hours, passionate about the opportunity to improve their local environment.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Tony Maroun was joined by Member for Watson and Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, Tony Burke to plant a tree and remarked at the success of the day.

“This is a great turnout from the Strathfield community, who are obviously very passionate about the local environment,” Cr Maroun said.

“We’ve had hundreds of people get in and plant trees here today and I hope each of them are proud of the contribution they are making to the environment and the enhancement these new plants will bring to Dean Reserve in the years to come.”

With over 300 planters working hard on the day, Council met its target of planting over 1600 small shrubs grasses and plants and add to the 2000 which were planted on last year’s National Tree Day.

Volunteer planters included Member for Strathfield, Charles Casuscelli, Strathfield SES members who also hosted the barbeque, 23 young people from the Hwa Tsang Buddhist Monastery in Homebush and a number of other Bushcare members.

Strathfield Council also facilitated a planting site with Strathfield Girls High School.

The small shrubs and grasses will be cared for and maintained over the coming months by Council staff and will help increase biodiversity and enhance the parkland.
