April 11 – Homebush West receives improvements to taxi rank

11 April 2014

The NSW Taxi Council has praised Strathfield Council for its safety program initiatives in Homebush West, which have included upgrades to the taxi rank on The Crescent, making it safer for local residents to get a taxi.

Strathfield Council has carried out a large number of safety upgrades in the Homebush West area, with thanks to a $95,000 grant from the Australian Government Attorney General Department.

The works have included the installation of nine new solar light towers on The Crescent on the approach to Flemington train station, increased lighting under and around the Centenary Drive overpass and tree trimming to improve sight lines and enhance pedestrian safety in the high commuter area.

The designated taxi rank at the exit to Flemington Station has also received new lighting and the sheltered taxi stand has been fitted with anti-vandal panels.

Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Bott said he hoped to attract more taxis to the area.

“Homebush West is an area of high-density housing, and most people who live here, depend on the public transport. This includes the need to be able to get a taxi, and often at night,” Cr Bott said.

“I hope these improvements can not only assist local residents to feel safer in the area but also encourage local taxis to come through Homebush West looking for a fare. This would be a good result all round.”
