Appointment of Strathfield Council General Manager (CEO)

For immediate release

11 July 2022

Mr Michael Mamo, current Director City Performance at Bayside Council in South Sydney has today been named as the Strathfield Council General Manager (CEO) after a nationwide search for the person to lead the organisation into its exciting future.

Mayor Councillor Matthew Blackmore is excited to announce the appointment after an extensive recruitment process conducted over the past few months,

“I am delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Mamo as our GM on a five year performance-based contract. He will take up the role on Monday 15 August 2022.

Michael was interviewed in person by the Councillors on two occasions – and he impressed Councillors with his youthful enthusiasm and apparent energy to take on his first General Manager role. He has very impressive local government experience, working as a Director at Bayside since 2018, and prior to that as Program Director (ICT) and Chief Financial Officer at Blacktown City Council, as Financial Services Manager at Waverley Council and Management Accountant at the City of Ryde Council. Whilst he has an obvious financial management expertise, it was Michael’s considered and thoughtful manner which suggested he will connect well with councillors, staff and our wonderful diverse community.”

Michael is a Company Directors Graduate from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and has a Bachelor of Business from Charles Sturt University.

There was a rigorous recruitment process which saw applications received from across Australia. Mayor Blackmore stated

“I am personally looking forward to working closely with Michael as we have many exciting challenges ahead. This will be a big move for Michael into his first appointment as a General Manager and I am sure the staff of Strathfield Council will benefit from his support and guidance in delivering the valuable services we provide to our community. His financial expertise will be an invaluable addition to our team, and his experience at both Bayside and Blacktown Councils working with diverse communities suggests he will get out and meet our community leaders as a first priority.”

Mr Mamo had this message for the Strathfield community and Council staff

“I am grateful for the opportunity the Council has provided me. I am honoured to be able to be part of an exciting future ahead for Strathfield. I look forward to working with Councillors and staff to deliver great outcomes for the community. We have many projects and priorities to be brought to life and I will ensure we have a financially sustainable future so we can deliver these projects and valuable services for the community.

I want to give great credit to the Council for their many achievements, I can see quality facilities and services already provided. I am looking forward to discussing with, and better understanding, each Councillors desires and aspirations.

I am particularly looking forward to meeting every staff member at the Council and to establishing a very strong, positive partnership across each of the departments and business units.  They will find me a good listener and that I am keen to ensure they have the skills, resources and support to undertake their roles.  I will visit the outdoor workforce as a first priority to let them know how much I value the day-to-day services they provide to our community.

I will also get out and about in my first weeks to meet as many community members as I can. I want to hear what they value from Council and where we can improve. They can be assured I will identify the Council and community priorities and act upon providing the Strathfield area with a great future.”
