Batteries

Do not throw your dead batteries or any objects containing batteries in your bins.

Batteries are toxic and flammable –  if you discard them in bins they become a fire hazard, endangering lives and causing disruptions to waste services.

By disposing of batteries correctly, you can be part of the solution to a growing waste problem.

You can dispose of your batteries at:

• Council free drop off points (at Customer Service and at Strathfield Council Library and Innovation Hub)
• Chemical Clean Out event
• B-Cycle Battery Recycling (available at Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings and Officeworks)
• Community Recycling Centres
• Battery World
• Officeworks

Also, remember to buy rechargeable and recyclable batteries whenever you can.

Chemicals

DVDs
Recycle DVDs at the recycling stations at Strathfield Library and Strathfield Council Customer Service Centre.

Electronic Waste

Accepted items include Computers and accessories, Monitors, Notebooks, Printers, Fax machines, Scanners, CD Drives, Hard Drives, TV’s, VCR Players, Cables, DVD Players, Stereos.

You can also check other initiative such as The Reconnect Project or ask your local post office about “Badged Tech Express” scheme, which allows consumers to recycle up to 22 kilograms of e-waste (like mobile phones, laptops, keyboards, computer parts and accessories) by paying a reduced mailing fee.

Food Waste
Food waste is one of the largest waste categories that can be easily diverted. Join the Compost Revolution and start your very own worm farm or compost.

Fire extinguishers
You can take fire extinguishers to Council’s free annual Chemical Clean up day! Sign up to the eNews to keep updated on future events.

Furniture

Check The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre for free collection and recycling or book your clean up collection online, where furniture are accepted for the removal of bulky household items.

Garden Waste
Simple! Just add to your green bin for collection. For large amounts of sticks, bundle them up and tie with rope for an on-call clean up.

Gas bottles

Glass bottles and jars

Glass bottles and jars are accepted to put in your yellow Lid Recycling Bin, use your waste calendar to check when your next collection will be.

Hazardous Waste

Household
Council’s On Call Clean Up service allows each residential property up to three clean up collections per year of up to two cubic metres for the removal of bulky household items.

Light Globes
Dispose of light globes safely at the recycling stations at Strathfield Library and Strathfield Council Customer Service Centre.

Litter
Return and Earn is the largest litter reduction scheme introduced in NSW, help protect our environment and promoting recycling.

Mobile Phones

Mobilemuster is the official recycling program of the mobile phone industry. Strathfield Council is proud to support this initiative of diverting the disposal of old mobile phones from landfill.

There are more than 3,500 collection points through out Australia including –

• Mobile phone retailers – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, 3 Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Crazy Johns,  Fone Zone, Allphones, Dick Smiths and Harvey Norman
• Nokia Care and Motorola One Service Centres
• Cartridge World stores
• Battery World stores
• Officeworks

MobileMuster accepts all brands of mobile phones, plus their batteries, chargers and accessories. Everything collected is recycled to the highest environmental standard for resource recovery. Deleting or removing any data from your SIM card or mobile phone is encouraged, although any data left on the device is destroyed in the recycling process.

Medicines
Strathfield Council supports the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) Project funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health & Ageing.

Residents can take all unwanted and out of date medicines to your local pharmacy anytime.

Motor Oil
Strathfield Council has installed a Waste Oil Recycling Facility at the Council depot located at 1 Weeroona Rd (off Centenary Drive).

This facility is open from Tuesday to Friday between 9 am and 12 noon by appointment only. To make an appointment please contact Council’s Depot Coordinator on 9748 9970.

Please note –

• Only waste motor oil will be accepted
• Residents must bring proof of residence
• All visitors to the depot must report to the Depot Coordinator
• All visitors must observe and abide by all signage and follow instructions from Council staff on safety matters
• Oils must be presented in 5L – 10L jerry can (maximum drop off amount is 20L).

Neon tubes 

Neon tubes or light globes are not accepted in your yellow Lid Recycling Bin, please visit FluoroCycle, or check out Community Recycling Centres near you for proper disposal.

Paint

Plastics bags

You can recycle plastic bags at RedCycle drop-off points at local supermarkets. Always remember: RETHINK – REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE

Soils or rocks
Please ensure soils and rocks are not disposed in any of your Domestic Waste Bins. Search for a licensed contractor for pick up or contact garden centres and landscape shops for drop offs.

Soft plastics

Soft plastics are not accepted in your yellow lid recycling bin. RedCycle are currently pausing their services, but you can safely dispose plastic bags and soft plastics into your red lid general household garbage bin.

Sharps
Needles, syringes, lancets and similar medical equipment should never be placed in your garbage or recycling bin.

To safely dispose of your syringe needles and other medical sharps you should obtain a sharps container from a needle and syringe outlet. When your container is full, secure the lid and deliver it to one of the pharmacies listed below –

Take away food containers (no leftover food)
We encourage you to put it in Yellow bin. Remember to always avoid single use plastic and try to bring your own food container, coffee cup and reusable cutlery.
