Strathfield Municipal Council

Water

The importance of managing our precious water resource is a topic of which we are all well aware, an increasing population, severe drought and dams at record lows set the scene for what is an increasingly import issue. A reduction in water consumption at every level of society is required to conserve Australia’s water resource.

Sustainable water strategy and what Council is doing to save water

Strathfield Council believes that we have an opportunity as a water user within the region to lead by example adopting sound water management techniques. One such measure council has undertaken is the process of creating a water conservation strategy as a part of a  broader Sustainable Water Program.

Council has committed under the plan to reduce water consumption in the following facilities:

  • Hudson Park Golf Course
  • Kurralee Childcare Centre
  • Mason Park
  • Cooke Park
  • Airey Park
  • Strathfield Children’s Centre
  • Strathfield Park
  • Bark Huts Reserve
  • Community Centre and Pre School
  • Strathfield Bowling and Recreation Club
  • Strathfield Library
  • Strathfield Council Depot
  • Strathfield Council Administration Centre and Town Hall

Various water sensitive techniques will be employed ranging from the installation of water tanks, use of waterless urinals, staff training and awareness of water conservation, and making alterations to operation procedures.

Irrigation Landscape Efficiency Project (ILEP)

Council has been successful with an application to participate in the Sydney Water Irrigation Landscape Efficiency Project (ILEP).

The project will assist Council with meeting actions identified within the Strathfield Water Savings Action Plan by improving water management and irrigation practices in open space areas that are irrigated using potable water (drinking water).

The irrigation of open space currently accounts for around 75 per cent of corporate water consumption.

ILEP complements the actions already undertaken by Strathfield Council to reduce our water use including our Storm Water Harvesting Scheme at Mason Park and the water efficiency actions implemented from the Strathfield Water Savings Action Plan within all our facilities.

The project involves three stages -

  • Stage 1 is a free irrigation and landscape assessment and report with recommendations for achieving greater water efficiencies.
  • Stage 2 will involve agreed implementation of the stage one recommendations. This may include updating irrigation systems, turf management, aeration, de-compaction and topdressing.
  • Stage 3 will involve Sydney Water working with Council to determine the success of the restoration activities and water savings achieved. Based on the stage 1 assessment recommendations, Council and Sydney Water would share costs equally for any agreed site works

The following sporting facilities are currently included in the program -

  • Airey Park
  • Bark Huts Reserve
  • Begnell Park
  • Hudson Oval
  • Hudson Park Golf Course
  • Mason Park
  • Strathfield Park
