River and Catchment Management

A catchment area is the area of land which, due to the nature of the terrain collects rainfall, and distributes it to a receiving waterway.

We all live in some form of catchment area, where our actions can have an impact on a receiving water body sometimes even several kilometres away. Allowing pollutants to fall into the stormwater system will eventually see that pollutant collecting in a water body such as a river or lake.

It is important to remember this fact when washing your car, walking your dog, or conducting any activity which may negatively impact your local catchment.

It is also possible to have a positive impact on your catchment, joining a local land care or Bushcare group is an easy way in which to get started protecting and enhancing a healthy catchment.

Strathfield Council is a member of the Cooks River Foreshores Working Group and Parramatta River Catchment Group, which comprise representative from local councils and representatives from State Government agencies. The purpose of these groups is to facilitate and coordinate improvements to the health and amenity of these river systems to realise their full potential as a natural, recreational, social, cultural and educational resources.
