Biodiversity in Streetscapes

The Improving Biodiversity in Streetscapes project is jointly funded by Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority (SMCMA) and Strathfield Council. The project aim is to improve biodiversity in streetscapes within Strathfield Municipality, whilst tabulating a decision support process along the way to be used across a broad range of local government areas.

To ensure the program is successful and long lived, Council investigated and researched the potential of native plantings in nature strips streetscapes planting project. These studies have involved preparatory research across both Australia and internationally.  To date two stages of studies have been performed.

As part of the Improving Biodiversity in Streetscapes Program, residents have the opportunity to create a native garden on their nature strip.

This program will help improve your streetscape through the planting of indigenous natives.

Some of the benefits of the program are:

  • Promote native biodiversity
  • Promote Water Sensitive Urban Design
  • Increase civic pride
  • Promote sustainable alternatives to turf

Nature strip sizes may vary, therefore the number of plants required and size of plants installed must be determined upon site assessment. The landscaping of nature strips must be done in accordance with Council guidelines and ongoing management of the nature strip will be the property owner’s responsibility.

Prior to planting consideration must be given to the placement of underground services, vehicle sight distances, property width, corner block, potential plant growth dimensions, location of nature strip, streetscape and building heritage.
