Strathfield Native Nursery specialises in the production of native plants especially those indigenous to the Strathfield area. This includes species belonging to Cooks River/Castlereagh Ironbark (an endangered ecological community), Cumberland Woodland, Turpentine - Ironbark Forest and Saltmarsh vegetation communities.
Strathfield Native Nursery contributes to local projects such as:
- Restoration of Mason Park Wetlands. The nursery provided thousands of native plants essential for rehabilitating the area, such as Melaleuca decora, Kunzea ambigua, and Pomaderris ssp.
- Replacements for dead or dying street trees. In 2004-05, a total of 72 dead or dying street trees were removed and replaced with advanced growth stock including the indigenous species Melaleuca decora grown from locally collected seed stock.
- National Tree Day. The nursery provides thousands of indigenous plants for plantings on National Tree Day in locations such as Airey Park.
- Cooks River Rehabilitation Project. The Nursery has supplied 16 560 local native plants to Cooks River Rehabilitation project. A similar order is currently being grown for 2006/07.
Promoting Biodiversity
Strathfield Council is actively promoting biodiversity within its Municipality. Of the 19,209 plants currently stocked in the nursery, 97.9% are locally indigenous. In October 2004, Strathfield Native Nursery had 118 different tree, shrub, groundcover and grass species in stock. This total does not include collections of the same species from different regions, essential in promoting genetic diversity and stability within Strathfield's native plant populations.
Strathfield Native Nursery also produces street trees from remnant seed indigenous to the area. An example of this is the Melaleuca decora also known as White Cloud tree. Indigenous street trees preserve the native habitat for Strathfield's birds, insects, arboreal mammals and bats
Bush regeneration and Adopt a Park
As well as producing plants for use by Strathfield Council in their revegetation projects, the nursery provides plants to bush regeneration groups, Adopt a Park, events, local schools and other Councils.
Access to Native Nursery
Strathfield Native Nursery is located in a secure site and is not open to the public. A $50 minimum purchase applies to each nursery order. Access to Council's Native Nursery requires an appointment. Call 9748 9907 to arrange an appointment.
The fees for purchasing plants is contained in Council's fees and charges.
It is important to remember that Strathfield Native Nursery has a limited capacity and is often growing plants on consignment so we may not have available stock at the time you wish purchase. When planning your project you may order in advance and we will grow the plants from seed to ensure they are available at the time you require.
