The winners of the 2007 Strathfield Council Heritage Conservation Awards are as follows:
176 Albert Road Strathfield
Restoration works involved restoring front wrought iron fence and gates to keep it consistent with the heritage style of the property. The original fence dates back to around 1920s to 30s. The dwelling named 'The Oaks' is a Victorian style villa built by one of the first settlers in Parramatta named Oak.
Existing fence had become run down, the base of the fence had been pushed out of alignment leaving the fence crooked in parts and some of the rendering below the sandstone blocks on the base had fallen out, the metal work was starting to rust and small parts of it were missing, the main gate was not functioning with one gate off its hinge.
Works involved removing entire fence and base, the metal part was cut into several sections and removed. The sandstone base was placed aside and old footings removed. New concrete footings were built and an agricultural pipe placed behind, the original sandstone repositioned on top of the new footings. The entire base was cement rendered. The metal work that had been removed was grit blasted and primed. The wrought iron spears were repositioned back onto the new base and gates were repositioned. The repair work on the wrought iron included supply of missing pines and spear points, supply of top and bottom rails.
The Award Citation was for ‘Superior and detailed restoration of Victorian style fence highly sympathetic to a heritage item’.
45 Merley Road Strathfield
Merley Road West has street planting of brushbox and streetscape characterised by single storey brick interwar style bungalows mixed with some Federation bungalow style houses with face brick with terracotta tile hipped or gabled roofs. 45 Merley Road is a new house but designed in a highly sympathetic style to complement the existing streetscape and adjoining bungalow style development. The house design utilised natural ventilation and incorporated rainwater tanks installed at rear of property under rear verandah. The house is includes brick finish, ceramic roof tiles with hardwood decking, with brick garage matching the style of the dwelling house.
The Award Citiation was for ‘Design of new house and fencing highly sympathetic to the interwar style streetscape of Merley Road’.
16 Meredith St Homebush
Works involved demolition of 1960s brick and iron fence and replacement with original picket style fence. Internal works also been undertaken including restoration of Victorian style leadlights (front door side lights, dining room, French doors to kitchen and bathroom window) and building of Victorian style conservatory on existing concrete veranda at rear. Existing dwelling is a Victorian style single storey home.
The Award Citation was for 'Superior building restoration, fencing and landscaping to a Victorian style house enhancing the streetscape of a heritage conservation area'.
