2006 Strathfield Council Heritage Conservation Awards were presented to the following properties.
16 Florence Street Strathfield
16 Florence Street is a Victorian style cottage. A previous winner of a Strathfield Council Heritage Award, the owner of this house has continued to restore and improve his property by restoring the front and back patios and retiling with heritage tessellated tiles. The former fence was demolished and replaced with a new fence, featuring iron palings, which are more sympathetic and appropriate to the Victorian style.

30 Abbotsford Road Homebush
The owners and their architect used very innovative designs, while maintaining the character of their Federation style house. The house features a new pavilion style section at the rear containing family/dining area, kitchen and laundry. The rear yard includes a BBQ area & terrace, courtyard and fountain. The extensions maintain and preserve the original trees, whilst incorporating placing a new pool at the rear of the yard, complete with a cabana. The new additions have been designed to enhance light and include energy and water saving devices such as installation of rainwater tanks. This work demonstrates that heritage is no barrier to adapting the best of modern design, while maintaining character of the historic home.
The Award Citation was ‘Superior restoration, sympathetic and innovative new additions to a Federation style house in a heritage conservation area’.
87 Abbotsford Road Homebush
The former owners of this house had removed the original gates and buried them in the garden. The current owners, who found the gates by chance, seized the opportunity to restore the old wrought iron gates and refit them on the front fence. The gates required restoration work by a specialist. To improve the overall look of the house and garden, they restored the gravel drive and realigned and replanted the garden adjacent to the driveway. Fences and fittings are often the first features to be removed, especially from Interwar Cottages. This restoration has enhanced their 1920s house and improved the streetscape of one of Strathfield’s most prominent heritage conservation areas.

49 Abbotsford Road Homebush
The owners of ‘Truro’ have undertaken an extensive renovations and a new addition to their Federation style house. Works include modernisation and updating of the living area including a new kitchen and bathrooms. An older bathroom was renewed with a design more sympathetic to the original. A unique but sympathetic colour scheme was designed picking up on colours featured in the original brickwork. The old tennis court has been replaced with a stunning but inviting landscape scheme, featuring water resistant plantings and low maintenance.

60 Abbotsford Road Homebush
The restoration of ‘Strathayne’, a Victorian villa c.1890, has required internal and external work. Prior to the restoration, the owners said many people commented that they were unable to identify the style of the house, as original features had been stripped from the house. The owners have restored the front of the house using new replacement materials such as returning the bullnose verandah and decoration masonry details and repainted the house in more suitable colours. Some of the materials used were recycled. The presentation of the house has been greatly enhanced by a new garden landscape, restoration of the entry tiles and paths. The old 1950s brick fence has been replaced by a more authentic timber paling fence.
