Strathfield Council runs a successful 'Adopt a Park' program that involves the adoption of parks throughout Strathfield by local schools and community organisations.
The program aims to involve the local community in local environmental issues associated with their parks and to promote ownership and community awareness of the importance of open space and the environment. It also aims to improve fauna and flora through the planting of local natives and creation of habitats.
The 'adopt a park' program starts with an official ceremony to commemorate the adoption of the park, this involves the unveiling of a plaque, tree planting and a barbecue. Regular activities will be planned in consultation with your group for the year and these activities may include planting days, weeding, park clean up, spreading of mulch, public art, educational programs and any other activity that is negotiated between your group and council.
Council's 'adopt a park' program works with groups, schools and community organisations. If you do not belong to a group, school or community organisation or the group does not want to participate in the program you can join one of Councils many Bushcare groups that participate in similar activities in council's parks and bushland areas. You will be given responsibility for caring for a select area in which you will plant local natives, weed and generally care for under Council supervision. Council provides all plants and materials.
If you, your community group or your school would like to become involved in Adopt a Park please contact Council on 9748 9999.
