Community input into the renewal of the Strathfield Town Centre is again invited, after Council resolved to put the final draft of the Concept Master Plan on public exhibition at last night’s meeting (Thursday 31 July).
The public exhibition of the final draft of the ‘Concept Master Plan’ follows the exhibition of the four options for the town centre last year. Since the exhibition of the four options, Council has been undertaking detailed work on the financial and practical feasibility of the entire project. The feasibility work together with the feedback from the public exhibition has resulted in the design detail and layout contained in the ‘concept master plan’.
The benefits of the plan include the separation and improved circulation of buses, cars and pedestrians due to the underground bus interchange, enlarged pedestrian friendly thoroughfares and separate car access. This will decrease the current car and bus traffic conflict and congestion and improve pedestrian safety.
The most visible public benefit will be the enlarged Strathfield Square which will feature re-levelled paved areas, shade trees, and large areas of informal and formal public seating. This will create one of the best quality public squares in Sydney.
Other major benefits of the plan include the proposed community facilities within the development over the bus interchange, which will provide a much needed community resource and focus within the town centre. The implementation of sustainability initiatives throughout the town centre is also a key benefit, which will; include “passive energy” standards for new buildings, and water harvesting and recycling.
Mayor of Strathfield, Paul Barron said: “The constant aim of this project is to rejuvenate the Strathfield Town Centre by reducing vehicle congestion, increase pedestrian amenity and improve the diversity and standard of the shops. This will ensure it is a place where people will want to visit and enjoy,” he said.
“Outside of the city CBD, Strathfield is one of the best connected places in Sydney, with much of the CityRail network accessible from Strathfield Train Station.”
“We want to capitalise on this and make Strathfield an even more seamless transport hub by creating an improved bus interchange that compliments the railway station.”
The Strathfield Town Centre Final Draft Concept Master Plan will be on public exhibition for six weeks from Thursday 7 August.
In addition, Council will host three Public Information Sessions to present and explain the Draft Final Concept Master Plan. They will be held as follows:
