Parents whose children attend infant and primary schools in Strathfield will be asked to sign a pledge stating they will drive and park safely in school zones as part of the final initiative in Strathfield Council’s Safety Outside Schools program.
The pledge is just one of a number of initiatives undertaken as part of the program, which is jointly funded by Council and the RTA Local Government Road Safety program.
Commencing in August 2007, the program has covered the legal usage of Kiss and Ride Zones, occupant restraints, parking around schools, safe pedestrian practices and speeding in school zones.
To promote the program, participating schools have also been provided with educational banners, safety vests and support information.
Mayor of Strathfield Paul Barron said: “With 16 schools within our Municipality, it is obviously a very high priority of Council’s to ensure students are safe in their travels to and from schools each day,” he said.
“While students have to be mindful of staying safe and know the road rules, this program has placed an emphasis on educating parents and those that drive through schools zones to be aware of the unique traffic environment of a school zone.”
Strathfield South Public Deputy Principal Nerolie Mouahbi, who has been a supporter of the Safety Outside Schools program, said: “The welfare and safety of students is our number one concern. Our parent community has responded positively to the council’s initiatives and a small band of willing parents has formed a roster to encourage continued safe practices around our school.
“We would like to thank Strathfield Council for their important role in this process,” she said.”
