Local MPs targeted in fight against State Government’s pro-developer laws

18 April 2008

Local State MPs will become the target in a new campaign against the State Government’s pro-developer laws to be launched today.

Strathfield Council is joining the state-wide community campaign called Keep it Local aimed at putting pressure on local State MPs to reject the State’s new pro-developer laws which tip the balance away from local communities towards developers.

On the Keep it Local website (www.keepitlocal.org.au), visitors can email their State MP and let them know their thoughts on the law changes.

Mayor of Strathfield, Paul Barron said: “Today Strathfield residents will be encouraged to send a clear message to their local State MP that control over local development should remain in community hands and not with developers.”

“Our community are concerned that these new pro-developer laws will mean that communities will have their rights to have a say about development in their backyards stripped away,’ Cr Barron said.

Cr Barron is also encouraging residents to tell the State Government what they think of the new laws while it is still on public exhibition.

“Council is not anti-development, but these new laws sees the balance go too far in the direction of developers. This is why I encourage all residents to stand up to the State Government by making a submission to the Planning Department and making representations to their local State MP.

Strathfield Council will be rolling out more campaign actions over the next three weeks in the lead up to critical decisions to be made by NSW State Parliament next month.
