Crime Prevention Plan receives funding from State Government

7 April 2008

Strathfield Council has received $50,000 from the Attorney General’s Department for its Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan.

The money will enable Council to implement and monitor strategies for a safer community, as well as appoint a part-time crime prevention officer.

The officer’s responsibilities will include the promotion of security in public spaces, liaising with Flemington Local Area Command (LAC), coordinating community safety and crime prevention forums and facilitating information exchange with the community.

The plan, which was adopted in July 2007, was initiated by Council and was supported by the Strathfield Crime Prevention Community Advisory Group. This group was made up of stakeholders including local service providers, community members and the Flemington LAC.

Mayor of Strathfield, Paul Barron said: “I wish to thank the Attorney General’s department for the grant as this enables us to better roll out this plan and ensure the community feels safer.

“Council has been concerned by robbery and stealing offences because occurrences of both in our LGA rank in the top two in the State, according to official BOSCAR figures.

“This is why we, along with the community and key stakeholders, have produced this plan.

“Now, with this funding, we can ensure that all actions outlined in the plan can be implemented for the benefit of our community.”
