Australia Day Awards

Each year, the Strathfield Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year are presented on Australia Day to local citizens/groups who have made outstanding contribution to the community.

These awards are about recognising and rewarding our local heroes,  you don't have to be a superstar or even famous. 

The announcement of awards winners is held on Australia Day, 26 January. For further information, contact Council's Customer Service Centre on 9748 9999.

Citizen of the Year

To be eligible for this award, the nominated person must be an Australian citizen over 25 years of age who has either made a noteworthy contribution to the Strathfield community during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.


The 2009 Citizen of the Year is Geoffrey Boyce

Geoffrey Boyce grew up in Strathfield and returned to the area 30 years ago. Upon his return, he was a member and chairman of Strathfield Council’s Olympic Initiatives Committee 1998 to 1999 and former member of the Strathfield Rotary Club. He is currently the vice president of the Strathfield Croquet Club and is an active member and elder of the Strathfield Uniting Church. Geoffrey has also been a newsagent in Strathfield Plaza for 8 years.


Young Citizen of the Year

To be eligible for this award, the nominated person must be an Australian citizen under 25 years of age who has either made a noteworthy contribution to the Strathfield community during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.

The 2009 Young Citizen of the Year is Jamal Kayrouz.

Jamal Kayrouz won 11 awards at her Year 10 graduation ceremony at Santa Sabina College, with 8 of the awards being for coming first in her subject area. Jamal is also an active member of St Joseph’s Maronite Church, took part in the Christian function for International Day for People with a Disability and participated in the Unicef Youth Forum 2008.
